The Baltimore Orioles and the Washington Nationals virtually occupy the same amount of radio real estate since BMore and DC are a mere 36 miles away from each other. It's very rare when you have two competing baseball teams in (virtually) the same state changing radio flagships all within a span of 72 hours. Let's start with the Orioles first. For a few years, the Orioles were a key piece of the puzzle that made 105.7 WHFS in Charm City what it was. What lured the O's off of Hearst Broadcasting's WBAL 1090 and onto the CBS FMer was that 105.7 was one of 12 Hot Talk "Free FM"s that CBS belted out across the country as a response to Howard Stern defecting to Sirius (now Sirius XM). CBS (then Infinity at the time) also had similar stations in New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Dallas, Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Detroit, Washington DC, and San Diego. Free FM was a failure and all flipped to other formats. The Baltimore station was one of the last Hot Talkers to change as it became a sports talk station known as 105.7 The Fan. CBS also flipped their DC Free FM at 106.7 to a similar format with the same name. More on that in a few... The heritage WJZ call letters which already exist on WJZ-AM 1300 as well as WJZ-TV in Baltimore (all CBS O&Os) also accompanied the format change. It is the #1 sports talk station in Baltimore.
